You Need An Email List
Ok, so by now you have hopefully setup your blog and have started a building out your brand or your business. Now what?
Now you need to start working on your email list!

Why do you need an email list
There are several reasons you need an email list. I’ll start by listing them out and then we’ll go through them one by one.

It’s the best way to create an audience
Who needs an audience, right? You do! Good news. It’s super easy to build an audience when you are gathering email addresses on your blog. That is part of the process of building your audience.
One of the best ways to get an email address is to have a pop-up on your site that simply asks the visitor for their email address. This can be done easily and quickly with Constant Contact and they already have designs for your sign-up form that you can use!
The sign-up forms can be in various styles:
- As a Pop-up that prompts users to sign up.
- Inline i.e. directly on the page in an eye-catching spot.
- A distinct landing page
- Now you can also create Facebook lead ads if you choose to promote your site on Facebook’s extensive network (which is a great idea by the way!)
For the Pop-up style of contact form, these can be done at various times during the user’s visit, such as:
- When they first visit your site
- When users visit a particular page or post
- After they have been on your site for a certain amount of time
- Perhaps they are coming to your site from somewhere else and you want a landing page for that campaign.

You – “Sure thing! I’ll put together a new post with all of the details and my thoughts on it. Then, I’ll send an email to my subscribers after I get it published so they can check it out!”
Really Awesome Blogger – “I’m so excited! I have this new course on xyz and can’t wait to let my readers know!”
Really Awesome Blogger talking to themselves – “I know, I’ll whip up a really cool email talking all about my new course with links back to my site where the users can sign up and get started today!”

Build a relationship with your audience
Promoting a product is great. However, another reason you need an email list is that it helps you to build a relationship with your audience.
In any business (and you need to treat your blog as a business!) the relationship you have with your customers should be a top priority. It is the same with a blog, but we will call your customers your audience. Because even if you just want to have a community outreach or non-profit type of blog, it is still important that you build that relationship with your audience.
Your audience or fan base will want to know what is going on with you or the business. That interest will grow more and more over time and the more you keep in contact with them, the better that relationship will be.
The bigger your audience grows, then you can look at different ways of monetizing your blog such as ads if your traffic is re-occurring and a significant size.
Helps create consistent traffic
As your relationship grows with your audience, you will start to see the importance of why you need an email list.
The great thing about building a relationship with your audience is that they will want to share your emails and posts with others.
So not only are you keeping your audience engaged by reaching out to them, they are helping to give your site consistent traffic. If your audience is sharing your emails or your posts, then that will help to increase your traffic over time as well! #Winning!!
Here is a scenario to think about – You spend the weekend writing the most amazing article for a new product you just tried and absolutely loved. It’s smoking hot off the presses and out into the world wide web.
That great! Except…..nobody sees it 🙁 Nobody knows about it.
Not yet anyway. But if you have been building your email list over time, then the next thing you do after publishing that awesome post is tell everyone on your email list “Hey, come check out my new post!!”.
So by the end of the day, people start checking their emails and following your links. Now you are already getting traffic to your new posts simply by letting your users know it was ready. The consistent traffic will help you with your page views. Plus, over time, this will help you with your search engine rankings.
Adds a personal touch
All of the things mentioned in this posts are great examples of why you need an email list. However, I wanted to save the best example for last.
Having an email list, and interacting with the audience on that list, adds a personal touch.
There are literally millions of bloggers out there. Maybe even a bazillion, I’m not sure. So how do you distinguish yourself from all of that chatter and noise.
Add your personal touch, not only to your blog, but to your email list. Undoubtedly, some users are going to respond to your emails. Some will even reach out to you besides just responding to your pretty emails. That is the perfect time to add a personal touch. Let them get to know the real you.
I mentioned earlier that you could outsource some graphic design work to people you meet on Fiverr and that’s great! However, try to do most of the content and writing in your emails yourself.
I can tell you personally that it makes a difference in who I follow, as well. When I first started my own hustling journey, I used to listen to a particular blogger’s podcasts every day. However, the more I listened to it the more it sounded scripted. The connection I had with that pod-caster was lost at that point. The experience and learning no longer had a personal touch.
However, one of my favorite people to listen to now is Nick Loper at the Side Hustle Nation. I have noticed that his podcasts have varying lengths. He goes with the flow and allows his guests to explain in detail what they do and how they do it. At that point, it becomes a conversation that I am almost a part of and not just on the receiving end of some scripted sound bites.
So the take away is to be you, add your personal touch, and Hustle On!
